STAIN  REMOVAL  TIPS

Your Guide to the Most Common Types of Stains and What You Can Do for Removing Stains

Carpet Stain Removal Tips

Carpet stain removal is a very broad topic.  Much depends on the carpet type (material) and on the type of stain to be removed.  So you need to know those before you start.  What works for one type of material and/or type of stain may make the stain worse, or set it permanently on another type of material for a different type of stain.

Updating this page is in process.  However, that will do you no good if you have a problem right now.  Carpet stains should be treated immediately.  Within 24 hours.  48 hours maximum is the commonly accepted rule.

If you know of what material your carpet is made and what is the cause of the stain, you can browse the supermarket or drug-store aisles for a perhaps suitable commercial stain removal product.  Read the instructions before using the product for stain removal -- carefully.

If you have any doubts, call a professional carpet cleaner.  A caveat:  Many of them, especially the cheap ones, are just untrained illegal aliens with a pickup truck with steam gear on it.  Steaming may or may not be appropriate for your carpet material and the type of stain that needs removing; it may actually damage the carpet and/or backing.

Disclaimer

Note that many stains cannot be removed. Some stain removal chemicals, agents, or even commercial stain removal products can damage or discolor fabrics, making the result even worse.

If you have any doubt as to the safety of your fabric or the fabric color, test the chemical(s) or product(s) you want to use to remove stains on an inconspicuous location on the garment.

If in doubt, consult a professional cleaning service.
