STAIN  REMOVAL  TIPS

Your Guide to the Most Common Types of Stains and What You Can Do for Removing Stains

The Most Important Stain Removal Tip You Will Ever Read!

Unfortunately, you need to heed this tip way before any stains occur.  So, remember this tip!

This vital tip is divided into three parts, all related to saving fabric information and fabric care information about your garments or other items.

Do not cut off the fabric care tags that are sewn into seams in clothing.
The Federal Trade Commission requires apparel manufacturers to attach permanent labels (fabric care tags) to garments supplying instructions for laundering or dry cleaning.  Look for these labels when you are considering a purchase.  These are usually sewn inside the back of the collar, inside the waistband, or inside the garment into a side seam.  The care necessary to keep a garment clean and attractive may be important in your deciding whether to buy it or not in the first place.  If a stain occurs, these tags will let you know if it is likely that you can attempt to remove a stain yourself, or if you should immediately take it to a dry cleaner.

Save the hang tags that come with clothing articles.
Hang tags frequently come with more expensive clothing articles.  They are not permanently attached, but are usually tied by string or elastic to a button or zipper on the item.  These tags usually provide more information about the garment material and construction, and sometimes provide detailed information about treating stains.

Keep printed materials provided by the manufacturer or installer.
Draperies, carpets, and upholstered furniture should all be furnished with information as to the material composition and recommendations for best care, as well as for stain removal.

Finally, "keep" and "save" means to file the hang tags and other printed reference material and instructions in an appropriately labeled file folder in an organized file cabinet with your other financial records.  Some items are a financial investment, however small.  For items that you really value, this material will be indispensable if you have to determine what to do about stain removal, should that time ever come.

Disclaimer

Note that many stains cannot be removed. Some stain removal chemicals, agents, or even commercial stain removal products can damage or discolor fabrics, making the result even worse.

If you have any doubt as to the safety of your fabric or the fabric color, test the chemical(s) or product(s) you want to use to remove stains on an inconspicuous location on the garment.

If in doubt, consult a professional cleaning service.

No liability is assumed -- use this advice at your own risk.
